SorarePodcast #32 - psufans2 FC - A Professional Sorare Player Explaining You How To Build Competitive Lineups
YNWA is not the only one who believes that Sorare will see a hundred managers with similar backgrounds like the one of Psufans2 who is a 10-year poker professional player & DFS professional.
psufans registered on the 15th of February 2021 and it has been two months that he is playing the game. He has been playing DFS during the 8 last years, especially American Football and he generally performs in niche sports that are not mainstream. This is why he has been able to prioritize American soccer for the last 8 to 10 years. He has been in touch with different products in the DFS industry, from content production to paying his living to play Fantasy Sports. Soccer is his favorite fantasy sport to participate in right now.
When he saw Sorare, he noticed that 10 to 20 people from the DFS community were already on the platform and saw that some guys were whales (+10 ETH) or some smaller (+3-5ETH). Some crypto enthusiasts also already knew that Sorare is a lot less stressful than other fantasy football platforms.
How much time do you devote to building your lineup?
I am looking to adjust my line-ups by following the news plus doing research for 80 to 100 hours a week. Soccer is generally an easier product for me. If you see football on TV, it is natural because you can adjust while watching soccer and know naturally who is gonna play or not. But as I have 15 to 20 sports under my umbrella, we produce projections to help people build their line-ups. For the moment, my timeline of a couple of hours a day suits me well.
YNWA: WoW! It is a significant amount of research. It is a full-time profession!
How do you see the Sorare setup? Are you confident? What are the early differences or similarities between Sorare and other Fantasy Football Platforms? Where do you feel better?
The way I look at it, I've seen people becoming better, and the competition increases. This is clear because, in general, people build every day more competitive line-ups. I may have 40-50k$ that I can invest, but I can lose this amount if I play another game than Sorare on a Saturday. On Sorare, as the platform is a success, you possess 40-50k$, and if you do not win anything during the weekend, you can play on Tuesday during the next game week. That is the crucial difference. Moreover, a key difference is that you have to look at your gallery value. A decade ago, people were horrible at making predictions and building lineups.
On the other side, I have noticed that there are a lot of mistakes that people make. For example, some lineup constructions do not make sense, or people take unnecessary risks on players that may or may not play. By doing stuff like that on Sorare, if they are not prioritizing lineups, overcoming a 0 is difficult, but to overcome a 35 score is pretty OK, so if you have a 0, you have nearly no chance of getting a reward. Personally, I am very comfortable with lineup construction and deciding the risk VS reward ratio.
YNWA: The maturity of the platform can explain that because they want to take risks if it is their last lineup. But the decisions are different each week if you play the long-term game. Moreover, people are collecting cards based on different criteria.
Of course, everyone has a different strategy. If the progression system was the same for everybody, it would not have been fun. If you have 2k$ to invest in Sorare, it is a different evolution for you than for a manager with 20k$. The thing that is common is that you still have to decide which players will play or not in your teams. I think that this decision should make sense. A person who has an extensive gallery does not mean that he will make the best decisions and will be able to make all his best players play during every game week. Everyone has a different categorization.
A point that I want to mention is that a player who is scoring well but is not playing every single game week is not a player you can rely on for every game week, that is also a factor you should take into account when buying or building your lineups.
A 60-70 points/player is the target you want to try to reach for obtaining the threshold. I know a lot of people want to reach the threshold but do not want to invest much in every single game week. So if you decide to invest .1 or .12 ETH/player, then maybe you will reach the threshold but not much more. You are not always going to have your best players being able to play.
A lot of time, you want to make play players from a region that most people are using in a particular league. For example, I use Vandervoordt for Challenger Europe when most people having Vandervoodt are using him for U23 leagues. So when he is having a great game, there are few people to have him as a keeper for the Challenger Europa League.
Have you been looking for long-term cards?
YNWA: You bought a full gallery of an established manager BTW congrats on that!
Yes, definitely, the first week I was on the platform, I bought a gallery for about 9 ETH, and that was before the boom. Immediately after, this gallery was worth 40 to 50. So I got a considerable benefit only by getting started! That gallery was built for utility and a long-term game. I see collectability as a long-term additional revenue. My favorite players are the ones who have utility and collectability characteristics. Anytime I see a young GK that could start in the long term, I am adding him for super cheap. The one that is coming to my mind right now is Ennio van der Gouw. If you have any Ennio or Vladislav Torop, you won't ever have to buy a U23 GK in 4 years.
What improvements are needed on Sorare?
If we want 100k people on this platform, we must think collectively. I talked to some people in the DFS community, and the problem is when you tell someone how much the entry price is on Sorare to build a competitive lineup, the reaction is naturally not an inclusive one. If you can make a 100$ entry point, it would be amazing. People are going to want to increase. And the good example of that is honestly myself. When I started DFS, I would have spent 500$ to 1k$ a night, and my bankroll was probably from 1k$ to 2k$. So I grew my bankroll down the road, and now my bankroll is 20k$ to 100k$ a night. A lot of people are under 21 years old, and they may not have 1k$ aside.
We want to win rewards and trades.
YNWA: We need to provide Rookie Leagues as an excellent starting to make the most of the game for the managers who are performing well with their common cards and start building from there.
The point is that the less money you have, the less probability you have to be successful. A person with 100$ is likelier to perform worse than a person with an initial budget of 1k$. Of course, you can win rewards and sell them to create the team you want. It is a smooth point that I loved in Sorare. Some Managers jumped off so fast that they are growing so fast! Generally, the DFS games propose to win one big prize once, but the problem with this approach is that you do not know how to allocate this amount as efficiently as possible. Sorare uses a different approach, and the cards are becoming stronger according to what you are doing with your cards.
Advice & Other Information
If someone has a stack, for example, Liverpool, this is a massive advantage because, during some gameweeks, only Liverpool can perform well. If not many teams are playing, then your probability of winning is much higher.
Hibee: The weekly tournaments also allow people to get more value from their Tier 3 rewards. If you do your research, you can beat many players by being a dynamic manager.
What happens if, in 2 weeks, you have 20k people in D4? It is a concern for me because even if you offer dynamic rewards, the rewards cannot match the requirements. The dynamic rewards will need to be improved along the way.
Hibee: I believe that more clubs will help create a more sustainable model and make it easy for managers to compete with a smaller budget.
YNWA: As new teams come, for example, there are 700 cards for AC Milan. I think the total value of cards in circulation needs to be controlled. Leagues have different characteristics, so the Total Printed Cards algorithm will factor in everything we discussed.
