Sorare — Recap of AMA (Ask Me Anything) with CEO Nicolas Julia

On Wednesday, February 3rd, Sorare Managers enjoyed a really positive AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Discord with the game CEO who shared the plans and vision for the next phase of growth.

In this article, we will simply highlight the main questions and answers that were addressed by Nicolas for the benefit of those who could not join. The first part of this article is composed of the top-15 questions collected before the AMA and the second part gathers answers collected following questions asked live by the audience.

Part I: Top-15

1. Multi-accounting and other similar issues

How are you going to tackle multi accounting and other similar issues where they send their cards and play and then divide gifts?

Our rule is one account per natural person. Managers cannot own and control more than one Sorare account that takes part in SO5. Over the last couple of months, the team has been working hard behind the scenes building a process to detect and prevent multi-accounting. We have also introduced Fairness Regulations to our system which will flag accounts that have received a significant percentage of their gallery (cards) for a significantly lower value than their average market value. We have put this in place to detect possible multi-accounting and Managers who are unfairly colluding together to reap the benefits of entering multiple teams into the same SO5 tournaments. We will not communicate the exact percentage or rules that our Fairness Regulations follow as this could lead to Managers abusing the system. Upon detection, we email the account and suspend them from taking part in SO5 tournaments for 7 days. We will then wait for their response and explain to them why their account has been suspended. If by the end of those 7 days the multi-accounts still exist, we will ban those accounts from taking part in all SO5 tournaments indefinitely. We have an account log that our system has detected and we will contact them in the coming weeks. Because of the importance of the process, we are testing everything meticulously before we automate our emails.

2. Blackpool, French Connection and Karuppu Corp

What is the difference between Blackpool, French Connection, and Karuppu Corp? What is for you the difference between these 3 projects? What do you accept and what do you forbid?

Blackpool is not multi-accounting and they operate within our fairness regulations. We see their confidence and enthusiasm for NFTs and in particular our licensed digital football cards as positive. We are confident they will contribute to Sorare’s market liquidity, growth and success. As discussed before, the French Connection was not breaking any of our multi-accounting rules or Fairness Regulations. We saw their idea to build the first Sorare clan as innovative. In hindsight, we should have asked the group of Managers to wait until we had a proper clan and collaborative feature in place. We had also overlooked the fact that certain Managers in the first Sorare Club would be reaping rewards from two teams in the same division. We’d like to clarify that this was not the French Connection’s fault. We made a mistake and we would like to thank them for putting their club vision on hold until we are better prepared for it. We have been in touch with Karuppu and the associated accounts and would like to thank them for their patience. Unlike the other two, they have been flagged by our Fairness Regulations system because the accounts have received a significant percentage of their gallery (cards) for a significantly lower value than their average market value. They are currently suspended from taking part in our SO5 tournaments.

3. 1/1000 Scarcity?

Once the top 20 leagues are all onboarded, and if the player base continues to grow at a huge rate - could these market conditions make a 1/1000 scarcity viable? If so, how far in the future do you see this being a consideration?

A new scarcity is something we are already looking into to reduce the barrier to entry for new Managers. We don't have a lot of info to share just yet, as we need to explore how different aspects of the Sorare experience would be impacted (rewards, entry requirements, Rookie League, etc).

4. High ETH

If ETH continued to increase in price, how would you manage the barrier to entry for new users?

Right now, a new scarcity level is something that we think will greatly lower the barrier to entry for new users.

5. Reward Distribution

Why don't we have a fair reward distribution in each division?

We're definitely planning to revisit our reward distribution in the near future to make sure all divisions are equally balanced. We want to encourage and facilitate progression from one Division to the next one.

6. Payouts

If ETH sky rocketed to 10,000 per eth. Will the payouts of 0.01 and 0.02 for the global all star be changed?

We are going to review our reward structure but we have no plans to change our ETH Thresholds for the foreseeable future. We see it as an important part of Manager progression. Obviously if it rockets to a value that we cannot maintain, we will review accordingly. We won’t make changes that will impact the ability for Managers to collect their ETH rewards and work their way up the rankings.

7. Threshold to win ETH in all tournaments

Do you think it will be a possibility to win ETH for reaching a threshold in the other tournaments? Not just Global All-Star?

We plan to make a more comprehensive review of our rewards structures in the game to find an improved balance across divisions. This is a good idea and something we’ll consider. Thanks!

8. Android App

Do you plan to develop an android app for phone and tabs?

There will be a Sorare App in the near future and we often share ideas and thoughts of how we see it working . Right now our focus is on improving the fantasy game and our website. Then we’ll start looking at how we can build an App that will offer an additional gallery and live match experience. Our ideas are BIG!

9. SO11

Is there any plans to expand from just the SO5 style in the next few months, potentially integrating an 11 a side tournament or maybe a 7 a side theme?

Our focus right now is on making SO5 the best Fantasy football game in the world. There are still a lot of ways we will improve the 5-a-side experience before we start introducing new formats.

10. Managers League

Are manager leagues in so5 something you are considering and if so how could it work (promotion/relegation)?

It’s an interesting idea but adding promotion and relegation mechanics isn't one of our priorities right now. We are however exploring new matchmaking and Head to Head features so that Managers of a similar experience and level can compete against each other.

11. Super Rare Cards

Are there concrete plans to increase the value of "super rare" cards on Sorare?

We are planning to revisit our tournament structure, the entry requirements, and rewards to find a better balance between the 3 scarcity types. Nothing to share just yet as it is also impacted by the discussion on new scarcities.

12. EPL teams

Are there plans to onboard any more EPL teams or is it true that you only have the license for one per season (West Ham previously, now Liverpool)?

The full Dutch league was a preview of what you can expect next :) We’ll onboard all the top 20 Leagues in the world. These are long conversations but we now have the credibility, traction, and resources to make it happen.

13. Belgian & Korean Leagues

We know that in Belgium it is quite common for games to start at 17:45 UTC, and at the same time Belgian league is one of the most popular in Sorare, it is possible to make the deadline half an hour earlier?

We actually spoke about this in this morning’s Product Meeting. We also saw the message about the Korean League fixtures that will not feature in our current Game Week structure. We’re going to look at potential solutions so that as few games as possible fall between the cracks. We know how important card utility is to everyone!

14. Scoring Matrix

Are there any plans to make changes to the scoring matrix for lost possession as currently, this kills GKs and Fullbacks even if they have played a good game?

This is one of our big community requests. Changes to the scoring matrix will influence the market so we’re reluctant to make significant changes on this side of the seasonal football calendar. We are already on our way to building the best scoring matrix in fantasy football and we will look to improve our system during the Summer.

15. New teams

Are you planning to add more teams in the short term? And is there any possibility that Juventus, Real Madrid and Liverpool players can be sold separately?

The reason we need to sell some players in bundles is down to image rights and our agreements with the club. We’re looking at solutions! We are planning to add a lot more teams in the short term, of course! There’s actually a new club joining tomorrow. Here’s your clue!

Part II: Answers collected following questions asked live by the audience

Gameweeks

We could see soon the Euro and the World Cup integrated into the gameweek. Sorare will provide a gameplay the Euro.

We'll have new leagues covered for the next football season and are currently reviewing the contract with our partner concerning the Asian Champions League.

Saudi Arabia Opta coverage is part of the evaluation with our partner.

There is a chance that AFC Champion's League will be covered in the future.

We want to guarantee that games featuring licensed teams will always fall between one GW or the next GW in the mid-term. We'll need to increase our coverage before. Probably not for this year.

We are committed to update the structure in the coming weeks.

Top 20 Leagues are defined as Top 20 in terms of revenue. Of course we'll have more in the coming years.

We are working to getting Arsenal on the platform.

We feel DNP it's part of the game, but do have plans to provide more tools and information to do research (not too much, because it's part of the fun too and an edge that some Managers have over others).

For now our plans are to keep the average scoring challenges in the Special Weeklys. We will run this concept a few more times because it was well received by the community. We have no plans to introduce it elsewhere just yet.

We are not thinking about introducing substitutes at the moment.

Transfer Market

We are looking into giving the possibility for users to launch auctions.

We consider allowing the seller to make a counter offer.

A loaning system/market on the platform is not a priority.

Retired Cards utility

We are looking into plans to add some sort of utility in the game but it is not for this season.

ETH

Crypto is the foundation. It brings scarcity, true ownership, portability... But Managers need to feel the benefits without seeing any of the complexity.

Ramp is working on a better withdrawal system and we are working to improve the experience.

We are currently evaluating different options regarding the blockchain we are using.

We want to have affordable prices in general, and we are working on it. It's part of a broader thinking with a new scarcity.

Our goal is to abstract the complexity of the blockchain to reach millions of fans - and we'll always work to reach this goal.

Rewards

There is a plan to review the reward structure.

We are still comitted to dedicate 40% of all cards as rewards.

We are considering in the way we are reviewing the rewards to give out injured players or DNP players.

You can expect different kinds of rewards that hopefully will improve your experience, make it more social and more fun.

We have plans to implement untradable rewards.

Draft

We have almost finished our new onboarding system which will mean that our new Managers will be much happier with their draft choices.

We're looking at ideas for a new training system.

We have plans to change the layout of the tournament team's set-up and most importantly a way to auto-fill the training teams.

We believe that our new and improved onbaording system will greatly improve the draft system process and ensure that managers are not disappointed with their picks the first time around.

Cards

As we have all the rights to do so, creating special edition action-style cards is just a matter of execution now. We do want to improve the collectible element of the platform.

There is no plans to change the bonuses link to card scarcity.

We are working on women's players.

We are always balancing supply and demand to build a healthy economy.

If the best solution is to have a SR only division, then that is what we'll do.

We have plans for weekly type of collectibles, and also better ways to display/collect them in your Gallery.

We are not afraid of a Rare cards prices crash due to the new scarcity, we'll introduce it carefully and build new game modes accordingly.

Metagame

We are developing a metagame where you'll progress based on growing your collection and improving your performance in SO5, so the answer is yes!

Roadmap

Our current priorities are around improving the gameplay, the collectible element of the platform, and the onboarding of new users. Some cool stuff to do with DeFi but it's more long-term.

We do have plans to make the game more accessible.

We always update our quarterly roadmap after the AMA session. That being said, we always prefer not to commit to a date, we prefer quality over meeting an exact date.

The Game Economist position is a hard pick because these are no open economies in the current games. That being said, we are moving forward.

We are friends with the NBA TOP Shots team and are going to bring this space to the masses together. They have a really cool product.

In the coming weeks, we'll have a product that will be ready to start some marketing. Be ready. We have big plans. We'll do things with football players and influencers.

Thank you all for these great questions, it was a real pleasure to spend this time with you!
